The Ubuntu Scholarship Program
Welcome to the Ubuntu Scholarship Program, dedicated to recognizing the achievements of graduating high school seniors and providing financial assistance as they continue their education in college.
Through our program, we aim to empower and uplift the next generation of leaders.

The Heart Behind Our Community
Named for the African concept of Ubuntu, which stresses the importance of community and shared humanity, the Ubuntu Scholarship Program was established in 2020 to support the belief that young people can progress further and succeed when a community stands behind them. A group of educators, community members, and alumni joined to support our scholars as they pursue their life goals through education.

Every year, we work to help graduating seniors of the Black diaspora find a sense of purpose in the work they do, and encourage them to stay rooted in serving their community as they grow. Along the way, we work to ease some of the financial weight and unseen pressures that too often stand between talent and opportunity.

Over the past 6 years, this commitment has grown into steady, meaningful impact. Eighteen Ubuntu Scholars have continued their education beyond high school, with the program remaining connected to their journeys along the way. To date, more than $130,000 in community-supported funding has helped ease financial barriers as students navigated college.

In June 2025, the first Ubuntu Scholar completed college as an honors graduate from Oregon State University. Since then, scholars have earned academic recognition, including Dean’s List and honor roll distinctions, with several maintaining GPAs above 3.9. Three of the scholars from 2022 & 2023 are on track to graduate in 2026! The Ubuntu committee continues to offer encouragement and connection as students carry the spirit of community forward.
How Our Scholarship Works

Every year, our committee opens the application process in early Spring and invites seniors to share their Ubuntu story, their life goals, and the work they've put into their education.

Students have about two months to gather what they need, including an academic transcript and a recommendation letter from an instructor, coach, or mentor.

Once applications close, we take our time reading through each one with care to select the Ubuntu finalists.
This small group of finalists is invited to interview with us. From there we select the students who will a multi-year Ubuntu Scholarship for college.*

At the end of the school year, in the beginning of June, scholars receive their awards certificates at the Ubuntu Graduation Ceremony.

We stay connected with our scholars throughout their journey, offering assistance, guidance, and support as they move toward their college graduation.
* Awards are funded over a four-year college career, based on satisfactory progress toward graduation, and are funded to the scholar's student account at their university.
